Burnt

Aren’t you tired of all the hoopla about soy? “It’s the healthy alternative.” Well who cares if the frustration and disappointment outweigh the benefits. “I’ll have a grande caffe latte with vanilla soy.” Yeah that’s exactly how I want to wake up, like a bouncy sorority girl, drinking merky liquid that turns an enjoyable morning ritual into a “pseudo virtuous” crack fix.

So now we transition to the soy movement in scented candles. In an effort to fight funk with a “possibly” healthier product, I continue to search for the perfect replacement for the proven paraffin wax candle. Its new age cousin burns so slow that it doesn’t burn at all. Smells gorgeous in the store but no sign of scent when burning it at home. Could be poor manufacturing? Maybe an unstable fragrance? I have no idea, but I do know that I have yet to enjoy one that lives up to a $45 + retail purchase.

Strange

Douglas Little is representing – the branded lifestyle, that is. My first introduction to him and his curiosoties was a few years back at the DL & Co launch at Studio @ Fred Segal, Santa Monica. At first glance he reminded me of those oddly brilliant characters that quietly dig through antique tchotchke at the flea market. The modern alchemist was seated perfectly in front of a carriage filled with taxidermy, skulls and other strange objects that resembled the Victorian Surrealism of Jeffrey Michael Harp. From his dangerously addictive absinthe candles wrapped in silk hat boxes to the black porcelain pheasant claw candleholder, Mr. Little lured me into his tangled web and I’ve been part of the cult ever since. He could be the real deal or a talented curator of fraud (I doubt it); either way it really doesn’t matter, the world of DL & Co will outlive all the Ye Olde imitators. –>
