Beauty

There has been a lot of chatter and finger pointing since the ban on the freakishly skinny models at Madrid Fashion Week, September ’06. The media has had a field day slamming the fashion and beauty industries for being responsible for manipulating consumer behavior and playing on our obsession for perfection, or what seems to be perfection in the eyes of the influencers. Let’s face it, it’s a vicious cycle and we’re all participating. Yes, even the consumer. What would weekly gossip magazine fiends do at work without hours of cheap thrills? And then there’s the prepared food lunch lines at Whole Foods, with the eating-disordered, you know who you are, hovered over the greens hand-selecting one leaf at a time. Move on people!

This past weekend I stumbled upon “Dangerous Beauty” while on pursuit for a Comme des Garcon 2 candle at the shop in West Chelsea. No need to remind me, I know I’m burning close to a dollar a minute to soak up my daily dose of sexy. I’m digressing. DB is the latest exhibition at the Chelsea Art Museum; a group show with works in varied mediums, all dealing with the mass ideology of beauty and the impact that it has on us. Maybe you should consider bumping your Botox social for a different kind of day of beauty?
