As fall season arrives so has Six Scents: Series Two. Much like Series 1, curator Joseph Quartana pairs up six designers with six perfumers to create six fragrances with a conscience. So many sixes! A portion of the net proceeds are channeled to support Pro-Natura’s environmental sustainability programs. Each designer partnered up with a different nose from Givaudan and used the guidelines of the art/nature relationship blended with, what else… they’re own style. Phillip Lim, Henry Holland, Damir Doma, Henrik Vibskov, Richard Nicoll and Toga are this year’s designers who will be represented in October’s launch. Pick up the 6 at Seven New York.

Nooka wants to get more intimate on you in a way that’s familiar…yet foreign. Well known for their innovative timepieces, accessories and collectibles, Nooka introduced this fragrance as first in a line called Beyond Common Scents which was launched in July at Den in NYC. The self-designed, futuristic box makes a point (2 sharp ones to be exact) with shiny and muted silver juxtaposing each other unmistakably. Inside, Nooka the fragrance is enclosed in a custom-made bottle with a multi-faceted gem of a top. Purpose-Built wrote all of the product copy, advised on formulation and package design. Purpose-Built also developed the entire launch strategy including marketing, PR, pop-up shop catalyst and is also responsible for this lengthy, self-promoting post. Art landed on his face. Featured in Interview Magazine’s August issue, 24 year old artist Levi van Veluw’s face-covered artistry is uncovered in the streets of Amsterdam by Viktor & Rolf. The drawings, in ballpoint pen, resemble stitching or checkered patterns. Other works are more complex using objects such as stones, carpeting, hair extension, and other unconventional materials. Levi considers these paradoxical pieces as performance art, not photography. Considering the commercial possibilities, I’d say his performance is only in its first act. –>

When will “Twilight” fall on the vamp craze haunting the cosmetic industry? With the rise of the dead on the flat screen came a trend in makeup that’s hemorrhaging good taste. DuWop’s Twilight Venom is case in point, geared towards puckering up the pusses of post-pubescent fans of bad television and hinting that it’s o.k. for them to bite each other. “Prime Venom” supposedly takes the fine lines out of lips leaving them blood-red after numerous applications. In other words, lip gloss. Anyway, the real application should be return it to the box (if it even has one) and bury it forever.

For all of you “green-folk” looking to light the way in your quest to save the earth, get out your matches. Filt, a candle company based in Tokyo, is grease-roots thinking. Based above Chubby cafe in Tokyo, they gather the well-filtered waste oil from the restaurant kitchen directly below, add vanilla scent and a wick…and voila. The sticky stuff is then poured into recycled glass from the local recycling bins and resemble those sand art thingy’s you made in summer camp. Thanks CScout for spotting this but unfortunately, it won’t fly in NY….its not trans fat free. –>

Water never looked so good with Kor’s sharp new bottle offering crafted for fashionable fill-ups at the fountain. Made from BPA free plastics and partnering with environmentally-conscious orgs like the Algalita Marine Research Foundation and the Blue Planet Run, Kor is saying they are not here to screw the Earth. They’re also non-screw on the cap and the bottle can be thrown in the top shelf of the dishwasher. Each of the beautiful, modern-lined containers match a different non-profit and you can stick personalized “stones” in the cap with positive messaging like “Never Settle”. Now that’s hard KOR.

The Prosthetics Project, a fall 2009 assignment for 21 students at the School of Visual Arts, is an exploration of functional design mixed with imagination for upper limb prosthetics. One standout by Dohun Park called “The Hands of Wisdom”, is a meditation kit containing 4 interchangeable hand gestures for prayer poses in Yoga, tying the ancient practice of mental therapy with modern functionality. The packaging is a carrying case with soothing art and elegant typeface that evoke the spirit of relaxation, mediation and heaven. Lets give a hand to the SVA for this project. –>
